Schizophrenia

Disorganized speech or behavior, delusions, hallucinations, and a loss of interest or involvement in everyday tasks are some of the characteristics of schizophrenia. There is frequently also difficulty focusing and remembering things. Psychotherapy, medicine, and coordinated specialty care services are used in combination for treatment. The precise etiology of schizophrenia remains unknown, however, altered brain chemistry, environmental factors, and genetics may contribute to the disorder.

Symptoms

Numerous issues with thinking (cognition), behavior, and emotions are associated with schizophrenia. While there are many different signs and symptoms, they typically entail delusions, hallucinations, or disordered speech and indicate a decreased capacity for functioning. Schizophrenia symptoms in men usually appear in their early to mid-20s. Symptoms in women usually start in their late 20s. Schizophrenia is not often diagnosed in youngsters and is not frequently diagnosed in adults over 45.

Symptoms may include:

  • Flat affect and apathy
  • Confused or bizarre thoughts
  • Delusions
  • Disorganized thinking and speech
  • Hallucination
  • Extremely disorganized or abnormal motor behavior

Treatment

Even if symptoms have decreased, treatment for schizophrenia must last a lifetime. Medication and psychosocial therapy treatments can aid in the management of the illness. Hospitalization could be required in some circumstances. The mainstay of treatment for schizophrenia is medicine, and the most often recommended drugs are antipsychotics. A psychologist, social worker, psychiatric nurse practitioner, and maybe a case manager to oversee care may be members of the treatment team for schizophrenia. We may have the full-team approach available in our office, where we specialize in treating schizophrenia.
