Trauma is the body's emotional reaction to a really stressful incident. War zones, natural disasters, accidents, and emotional or sexual abuse are a few examples. Numerous emotional responses, such as flashbacks, disrupted relationships, erratic emotions, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea, can be brought on by trauma. While not everyone who goes through a traumatic situation will experience trauma, we can help you find the answers you need to get the care you need.

Symptoms of Psychological Trauma

Symptoms may include:

Guilt or shame
Self-blame
Withdrawing from others
Feeling sad or hopeless
Feeling disconnected or ‘numb’
Confusion or difficulty concentrating
Anger, irritability and mood swings
Anxiety and fear

Types

There are three main types of Trauma: Acute, Chronic, or Complex.

Acute trauma: Results from a single incident
Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence or abuse
Complex trauma is exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, and interpersonal nature

Treatment

People with trauma can enhance their quality of life and manage their symptoms with a variety of treatments. While they might help a person manage symptoms like anxiety, depression, and sleep difficulties, medications cannot treat trauma or PTSD on their own. The primary line of treatment for trauma is therapy. For the best chance of patient success, you should ideally work with a trauma-informed therapist who can coordinate with your Psychiatry Associates care team.
